Wisconsin — Streaming Sunsets

September 4th–8th

Leaving the north shore in Minnesota, we drove through Duluth, around the southern tip of Lake Superior. We spent four nights in Wisconsin on the South Shore. Once settled at the Apostle Islands Campground, we “got dressed” for dinner at a local social club in the small town of Bayfield, Wisconsin.

Our friends from Tyler were also planning a trip through Michigan and Wisconsin. They discovered that the Wallflowers (a popular band from the mid 1990s) were going to be in concert at The Big Top venue just south of Bayfield, so we bought tickets and planned a meetup. Before the concert, we hosted Roger and Mary Lynn McKnight Smith for dinner at our campsite. It was soul filling to catch up with our hometown friends of nearly 35 years, even if just for a short while.

Our second full day in Bayfield, Tom and I rode our bikes from the campground into town. We had a lovely morning shopping, watching the ferry activity around the Apostle Islands, then enjoyed a shoreside lunch at Hoops Fish Market. Later that day we explored the fruit loop, where we sipped on apple cider and picked fresh blueberries. Turns out, blueberry picking is effortless. We set out to pick a pint or two and ended up with four pounds! Needless to say, our tiny freezer is full and we will be bringing blueberries to any social gatherings we attend over the next few weeks.

Our last full day in the area, we set out for a hike on the other side of the peninsula. We started at Meyers Beach Trailhead. The first mile or two was through a forest of aspen, birch, and pine. Once the trail opened up, we enjoyed spectacular views of Lake Superior and the red cliff walls below. We watched many kayakers, who departed from Meyers Beach, paddle in and out of the sea caves and along the red cliff walls. In total, I think our hike was 5 miles round trip. Let’s just say it was a great leg workout day.

Our last evening in the park, we enjoyed visiting with fellow Airstreamers who connected last year’s travel through Pennsylvania (Julie and Bill) to our upcoming caravan in the UP of Michigan.

We really enjoyed our time in Bayfield, Wisconsin.
